Whickham Golf Club is a 6095 yard, par 71 parklands course located just outside the village of Whickham near Newcastle upon Tyne.
Upon entering the car park you are met by some great looking old gatehouses that house the pro shop and work shop. The club house has a good sized bar area, with live sport, food and a good drinks selection. There’s also a great area outside overlooking the 18th green for a post round pint.
The course has a small driving range, chipping and putting green for some pre match practice.
It all starts with a fairly tricky drive, which is a sign of things to come, the landing area is fairly generous but thick rough and trees run tight left up from the tee box. Whickham is a course where the driver is not always needed, doglegs, hazards and tight fairways make accuracy from the tee critical. The rough areas at Whickham can be brutal and most holes are littered with large clusters of trees.
Like every time we play here, the course was in great condition, the greens were running true and fast, fairways and tee boxes in great condition too. The course is hilly, you know you’ve played a round after carrying your bag around Whickham.
Our favourite holes. Hard to pick but we really like the par 5 3rd, playing up the hill and past the gorge. The hole plays long but offers a great birdie opportunity. Views from the green of the 4th are great. The dog leg 6th and par 4 9th hitting over a big drop is fun.
The dog leg left 14 is a tricky hole, you really need to pick your landing spot carefully to avoid the steep runoffs into rough and trees. The green has a huge drop off to one side and is nestled against a steep bank, so it’s crucial to get your approach right. The 15th is probably the feature hole at Whickham, the views of the Derwent Valley are incredible as you tee off from a raised tee box down to a sloping fairway. Also the 18th is a good par 4 to finish your round.
In summary, a great day out at Whickham, followed by a nice pint in the sunshine!
Huge thank you to all the staff and members that made us feel welcome.
